In South Vancouver

The Cedar Cottage Food Network hosts three Mobile Produce Markets per month at BC Housing sites in South East Vancouver. These markets provide fresh fruits and vegetables to both tenants of the sites and other community members at an affordable cost. By running these markets, we hope to reduce barriers to accessing fresh produce while creating a welcoming community where we sample recipes, share stories, and chat about all things food.

Our next markets will be:
Saturday, March 16th: Brant Villa (2290 E. 25th Ave near Nanaimo Skytrain station) from 10am-2pm

Saturday, March 16th: Culloden Court (1375 E. 47th Ave near Knight St) from 2pm-4pm

Saturday, April 13th: Orchard Park (5988 Nanaimo Street near E 41st Ave) from 2-4pm

Beyond South Vancouver

Please join the BC Food Systems Network as we celebrate 15 years of promoting sustainability and democracy in the BC food system!

The 15th Annual Gathering will be held at George Pringle Memorial Camp in Shawnigan Lake from July 5th through July 7th. ShawniganLake is located on Vancouver Island, about forty-five kilometres northwest of Victoria. The theme for this year’s event is “Food from the water, food from the land”. The Network recognizes that food is a human right. It is a gift from the Creator and we must honour the food as well as its sources, whether they be land or water based. Join us as we explore a wide range of issues related to producing and gathering food in British Columbia and explore ways to celebrate and protect our abundant resources.
The Network has a holistic perspective, embracing the way food issues cross cultures, sectors, and age groups. The annual Gathering is one of the ways we share insights, initiatives, strategies and critical analysis of the food system. The Gathering is held in a different community each year, giving people in various regions the opportunity to learn from one another; to build or strengthen alliances, and to collectively advance food policy issues. This year’s Gathering will provide a balance of workshops, presentations and panel discussions with outdoor activities and time for sharing and socializing.
Registration details and a call for proposals will be issued shortly. If you would like to receive regular updates regarding the 2013 Gathering, please join our listserv or Facebook Events Page (please feel free to invite your friends!).

Gardening Course: Grow your Own Food!

Farmers on 57th and Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre present:

Do you want to grow your own vegetables and herbs, but don't know where to start? The Farmers on 57th are building new instructional garden plots just for you!Come experience the joy of growing your favourite vegetables under the guidance of professional gardeners and educators, Karen Ageson and Tessa Wetherill, who are thrilled to be sharing their passion with you. The learning will be hands-on: you will plan, plant and tend your own garden plot, with instruction and support throughout the growing season. Along the way, you'll learn about garden planning, soil health, seed starting, transplanting, weeding, watering and organic pest control. You will learn all that is necessary to start, maintain and eat from your own garden.

We will meet 6pm every 2nd Wednesday throughout the season April 3rd to September 4th, 2013. If you can't attend every class, don't worry—there'll be hand-outs and opportunities to catch up. Expect to visit your garden outside of 'class time' to water, weed, and harvest your bounty!

We will be outdoors, so please dress for the weather. Bring gardening gloves if you want them. All other supplies are included, and the food you grow is yours to enjoy. We encourage you to garden with your family—registration cost is per plot, not per person. One plot per family, please.
